Celebrities and Gamers Unite in Childhood Nostalgia for War Child UK
Nish Kumar, Blake Harrison and more to join The Yogscast in retro-gaming fundraising stream - Steam Sale of Old-School Classics Starts Tomorrow
London, United Kingdom – 4th April 2019 – War Child UK returns with RE-PLAY, the unique fundraising campaign that shines a light on the giants of old and reconnects gamers with favourite titles from their formative years, supporting the right to play for some of the world’s most vulnerable children.
From 5th-11th April, a variety of activities will take place, from an in-game celebrity disco and a retro-inspired Steam sale, to leading comedians and gaming personalities playing their favourite games live on Twitch.
Join War Child UK for a retro-gaming livestream, hosted by Mark “Turps” Turpin from The Yogscast, and transport yourself back in time. Turps will be joined by star guests such as comedians Nish Kumar and Steve McNeil, Blake Harrison, famously known as Neil Sutherland from The Inbetweeners, as well as Radderss & Geestar from The Yogscast, and famed games crew Outside Xbox/Outside Xtra.
The stream can be watched live on The Yogscast’s official Twitch channel from 3pm GMT, 9th April: https://www.twitch.tv/yogscast.
A number of retro titles from acclaimed studios such as Devolver, DoubleFine, Dotemu, Motion Twin, Kongregate, Oddworld Inhabitants, SEGA HARDlight and team17 will have some of their illustrious titles on Steam or Mobile at a discount, with a percentage of proceeds donated to War Child. Halfbrick, the creators of Dan The Man, is also making a fixed donation of $5,000 USD.
The RE-PLAY sale celebrates all things retro; from classics to modern pixel-art titles running from 5th–11th April and can be found on the Steam store.
Terraria by RE-LOGIC, Stories Untold by Devolver / No Code are donating 100% of developer proceeds on Steam and Kongregate is donating 100% of net revenue of Bit Heroes from specific in-app purchases on all platforms; AppStore, Google Play, Steam and the Kongragate store.
War Child UK has also partnered with Lockwood, creators of Avakin Life, the hugely popular free-to-play 3D mobile app where players can customise their avatars and socialise and party with friends, all in a huge online community. Avakin Life and War Child UK will play host to an exclusive retro themed disco party within the game, with arcade machines and light up floors. Players can enter the private party by having their avatar don a War Child Peace & Love T-shirt, designed by British design sensation Bella Freud which they can purchase in-game, with proceeds going to the charity.
Wayne Emanuel, Head of Gaming Partnerships, War Child UK, “We all remember our favourite games growing up, but not every child is fortunate enough to have a childhood they would like to remember. It’s only our second year of RE-PLAY and it’s amazing to see even more support from so many generous, talented studios and personalities to help raise vital funds and awareness. Childhood is such an important time, we’re looking forward to celebrating it.”
Mark ‘Turps’ Turpin, CEO and content creator at The Yogscast, “We’re really excited to have this great event on the main Yogscast Twitch channel this year. I’m looking forward to introducing some big names playing some great games.”
Yordan Gyurchev, Technical Director at SEGA HARDlight, “The Sonic Forces team and all of us at HARDlight are delighted to be part of an event contributing to such a great cause."
Sonic the Hedgehog sparks happy childhood memories for many of us in the studio and it means a lot to be able to contribute to War Child's work as they help give children a better chance of building happy memories of their own.”
War Child UK supports children whose lives have been torn apart by war. The specialist gaming team has innovative fundraising partnerships across the PC, console and mobile industries, as well as through streaming and support from the gaming community and to date has brought in a massive $4.3million through gaming. ABOUT WAR CHILD UK
War Child is striving for a world where children’s lives are no longer torn apart by war.
We protect, educate and stand up for the rights of children caught up in conflict. We aim to reach children as early as possible when conflict breaks out, and stay to support them through their recovery - helping to keep them safe, give them an education, and equip them with skills for the future.
We understand children’s needs, respect their rights, and put them at the centre of the solution - from supporting Syrian children to access education, to reintegrating child soldiers in the Central African Republic and promoting justice for young people in detention in Afghanistan. Together with our partners we work in 15 countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and Latin America.
We also work with children and young people to change systems and practices that affect them – campaigning on the root causes of conflict and demanding that children are at the centre of humanitarian response.
